Preventing Bacteria in the Office

Preventing Bacteria in the Office

We all want to work in a clean and healthy environment, so where are bacteria and infections to be found, and how can the Cardiff Cleaning Company help and how can you help yourself?

Bacteria are most common in places of frequent use like computer keyboards, your mouse, phones, switches and door handles. They also occur in common areas such as kitchens where kettles, microwaves, towels, dish cloths, and washing up sponges are used. In washroom facilities areas such as toilet handles, door handles and light switches are common sources of bacteria. In essence all door handles and plates, light switches, and lift buttons are susceptable.

Bacteria can live up to 48 hours on each surface so it is vital that your office is regularly cleaned to maintain adequate hygene standards. We cannot avoid touching these surfaces, but it is important to ensure that all colleagues wash their hands regularly.

The Cardiff Cleaning Company have specially formulated cleaners that can mitigate against many of the harmful bacteria that occur on these surfaces, not just switches and door handles, but computer equipment as well.

How can you help yourself? The first step is to practice the level of hygene you would at home by ensuring that you wash your hands regularly. Ensure that your desk is sanitised regularly and avoid eating at your desk. Eating at your desk invariably involves the generation of crumbs or particles of food which, as bacteria are living organisms and need to feed, thrive upon.

In the kitchen ensure that someone is delegated to ensure that all surfaces are regularly cleaned, cups are washed with detergent, not just rinsed, and paper towels are used where possible. Also ensure that all cooking appliances are kept clean - cookers are cleaned and microwaves wiped out after cooking. A regular check on fridge contents is advisable to check for any out of date food whch can be discarded and the shelves kept clean.

Litter bins are another source of bacteria, so ensure that these are emptied regularly and kept clean, either by washing or the use of disposable bin liners.

We all have a general duty to maintain a healthy environment for ourselves and our co-workers, for as we spend much of our time in the office, it may as well be a clean and healthy place, it lifts moods and encourages a positive attitude and presents a welcoming image to visitors and clients alike. Encouage the use of hand soaps and gels, wipe up any spills and crumbs to reduce the food supply to any bacteria present.
